Wine Review: This midnight blue colored Syrah from Washington State tied for first place in our first Big Blind Tasting of Syrahs. It opens with an intriguing blueberry, blackberry, leather and old oak bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, balanced, and juicy. The flavor profile is a tasty black raspberry with nicely infused minerality. The panel also detected notes of black pepper and hints of blueberry and black cherry. Overall it was pretty complex. The finish was dry and its flavors and well managed tannins fade away nicely. The panel suggested pairing this gem with a filet mignon. Enjoy – KWGTP
Winemaker Notes: John Duval, formerly of Australia's iconic Penfolds Grange, chose the Columbia Valley as his "Sequel" for the continuation of his life's work with Syrah. Opaque and blue-ish purple in color, this is an expressive wine offering vibrant aromas of sweet dark fruits, grilled meats and freshly roasted chestnuts. Dark cherry flavors laced with notes of nutmeg and savory spice are framed by refined tannins and a delicate acidity that lingers on the finish.
