Wine Review: This big boy "Mountain Cuvee" from Chappellet opens with a blackberry and black cherry bouquet with hints of black tea, leather, and peony. On the palate this wine is full bodied with medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is round, rich, and youthful. The flavor profile is an extracted blackberry and oak blend with notes of cassis, black tea, and black pepper. We also detected some hints of black licorice and stony minerality. The finish is dry and its dusty big mountain tannins build-up and stick around for a very long time. We would decant this wine for a little while as it settles in nicely with some aeration. Then we would pair it with a well-marbled ribeye. Enjoy - Ken & Mark
Winemaker Notes: Blended from the traditional Bordeaux varietals, including our own coveted grapes, the Chappellet Mountain Cuvée Proprietor's Blend builds on our more than five decades of experience crafting great mountain-grown wines. Each grape variety in the cuvée contributes nuances that complement each other. The 2021 is beautifully aromatic featuring concentrated notes of red currant, boysenberry, cassis, roasted coffee, and dark chocolate, along with savory undertones and notions of sweet oak. On the palate it is rich and mouthcoating, with a seamless texture and supple tannins framing luxurious layers of dark berry fruit, barrel spice and fresh herbs. Made for more near-term enjoyment, this is the wine to choose when you're looking for vivid, mouth filling fruit flavors.
