Wine Review: It is baseball season and every once in a while someone hits the ball out of the park. That was the feeling I got when I tried this wine. As many of you know by now, the 2005 vintage for Zinfandel is one of elegance. Well this wine has that elegance, but also has the structure that is lacking in many of the 2005’s. As a result, this wine is a winner in my book. This indigo colored wine opens with a very fragrant and complex nose. The most prominent scent is boysenberry followed by some earth, clove, and prune. On the palate, this wine is smooth, soft, with lush and tasty black current flavors and notes of spice. The finish is dry with soft tannins that drift away nicely. This is a wine that that makes you want more. The more I drank this wine the more I liked it. It was a real treat. Enjoy – Ken
Winemaker Notes: Somers Ranch is an exceptional vineyard located in the eastern hills of the Dry Creek Valley. At first swirl, aromas of boysenberry, cherry, and pepper provide an exciting preview for the flavors that follow. On the palate, the fruit is succulent and rich, without being overpowering. The tannins are smooth and integrated and develop further with more time in the glass. This wine displays impeccable balance and structure for a young Zinfandel and should continue to develop for the next five years.
