Wine Review: I recently attended a Rolf Binder tasting of his latest wines. This wine was my favorite wine from his collection of gems. This dark purple wine was matured in various oaks over 2 years. It opens with an elegant slightly spicy Eucalyptus like bouquet. On the palate, this medium to full bodied wine is extremely well balanced and elegant. It has polished plum like flavors. This wine is gorgeous. The finish is slightly dry, has ultra fine tannins, and runs on nicely for some time. This very very food friendly wine would pair perfectly with a nice veal chop. This wine is very drinkable and approachable now. I wouldn’t cellar it very long. Enjoy – Ken
Winemaker Notes: The Heysen is one of the flagship wines of Rolf Binder Wines. The Heysen is an export production wine only. Comprising dry grown Shiraz and varying amounts of 1-4% Cabernet Sauvignon (depending on the vintage), the Heysen is named after the Heysen walking trail that runs by the vineyard. It is characterised by a velvety texture and softness. Winter 2004 produced above average rainfall, followed by a warm Spring producing good flowering weather with the late November Spring rains. Summer started with a cool December, rains in January and a dry February. A warm Autumn caused an early vintage with all grape varieties ripening at once. The quality of the 2005 vintage is sure to be ranked as one of the best on record, after 2002, with all varieties showing strongly.
